I've been a little quiet lately...

Why? Well, Tonga is a lot of fun, so that’s part of it. There have been some other fun single-handers through here so I’ve been enjoying some camaraderie. Also, never discount the curmudgeon factor when dealing with a solo sailor (exchange your lawn for 30ft of seawater, that’ll keep the damn kids off it). The real reason though has been a blogging project…

Quite a few people have asked me if I have some sort of blog where they could follow me. Usually I just direct them to Facebook, which has been a great way for me to keep in touch with family and friends as I travel. Up till now that’s been great. Anything put up on Facebook though is subject to their terms of service. Currently that means:

[...] you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide license to use any IP content that you post [...]

That’s all fine and good, and I think that Facebook is pretty responsible and reasonable, but if there is a photo or a story that might be worthy of selling or publishing somewhere I want just a little more control over it. So I’ve been reluctant to put things like that on Facebook.

There are a million and tools to get a blog up and running in moments…  Well…  as Ranger Doug from Riders in the Sky says, “that might be the easy way, but it wouldn’t be the cowboy way”.  So every time I’ve set myself down in front of the computer I’ve been learning about html, bbcode, posts, openID, gravatars, xml, kml… and a lot more stuff that has just generally sapped my will to sit down and write anything.

As a matter of fact, this note is little more than an experiment… so I’m going to stop whining and get back to the digital grind.

I’m so glad you’re having fun. I looked closely at the picture you posted on FB and none of your little doctor pallies looked like a tranny, so things seem to be going well for you down there. :)

Take good care but remind me to check in here through FB once in a while…I have a brain like a sieve.

Couldn’t say if they were trannies or not, they could sing pretty well though. They come to Tonga for the karoake, and the amputations… lots of amputations… ewww!

Goal for tonight is actually to get the blog Facebook integrated, share comments back and forth and such. I may as well have called the boat One-Track, I don’t think I could keep up with updating everything separately.

And hey, welcome to the blog. You have first comment honors, woohoo!

I didn’t realize you’d replied to my comment. I wonder if it showed up anywhere and I just didn’t notice it? It’s a real honor to have been the first poster, too. ;)

I like the blog and am interested in what’s happening, so I’ll look forward to your next post.

Also, I noticed that I’m linked in to your blog through facebook, on accounta my picture shows up in the upper right corner. If you start getting random posts, it’s because I’m experimenting with the interface, too.

    Take care of yourself!

  • The facebook integration is getting there :) If you make comments on the ‘notes’ that go to FB for each post they should show up here as well.
If you logout of the blog (button on the comment form at the bottom) you should be able to sign back in with fbConnect to comment.

And thanks to your wonderful replies I can get things sorted out faster because I know what’s going on. Thanks!

Should be a couple of options at the bottom of the page to subscribe via email to the comments
